Introduction

By Nathan B. Smith

Hello everyone! My name is Nathan Smith. I am originally from Wellesley, Massachusetts but have called San Diego my home for 30 years. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from The American University in Washington DC. I have also studied business administration and wireless communications engineering at National University in La Jolla, California, culminating in an MBA and Master of Science. I am now pursuing a doctorate in Computer Science with an emphasis in Big Data Analytics at Colorado Technical University. I've completed 50% of the program, including fundamental doctoral research and computer science courses. I am fortunate to have participated in a face-to-face doctoral symposium in Denver. Hopefully, we will be able to experience these events in person again!

I am a retired Surface Warfare Officer operating in the amphibious forces worldwide. I spent 12 years on active duty and was stationed in Norfolk, VA, and San Diego. After leaving active duty, I affiliated with the Naval Reserve Force and supported the Naval Coastal Warfare community. Throughout my naval career, I specialized in telecommunications. I was fortunate to serve alongside the Air Force and Coast Guard on several overseas assignments.

As a civilian, I now work in technical engineering communications and have supported healthcare, telecommunications, education, and aerospace projects. I am currently working for Collins Aerospace, a business unit of Raytheon Technologies. I am working in aftermarket technical support for a division that manufactures commercial aircraft nacelles, including thrust reversers.

Like many these days, my company has embarked upon a comprehensive digitalization effort to gather and leverage big data. We intend to build the business by leveraging modern technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning. As a technical writer, I am interested in using AI and ML to gather business intelligence from our vast technical content delivery network. More specifically, we are interested in determining what content is most valuable to our customers and how this data can improve sales.

As a side gig, I am a Lyft driver and am incredibly interested in the data science that makes the ride-share business work. I also enjoy the fascinating conversations I have with literally thousands of my riders.
